The Star Void

The three sloops glided silently though the evening sky, held aloft by levitational magic and guided solely by the wind in their sails. The ships floated gracefully over the outer Ryaene Archipelago; bearers of the only sophonts for miles around.
Sechyo stood at the tiller of the Nephele, the lead ship, feeling the warm breeze gently ruffle her long, maroon hair. She watched her crew with her unusual golden eyes as they ambled about relaxedly, doing their jobs with care, not rushing. There was no need to; the weathermages and meteorologists had predicted calm skies for the next two days. She smiled at the thought of an entire journey with no major problems.
Sechyo signaled with hand gestures to her companion ships, the Aura and the Hesperos. Their respective captains replied via the same sign language that their ships were also nominal.
Of course, nothing in life was ever easy.
Without warning, the sky split open with a tremendous roaring snap. The three ships were helplessly drawn into the gaping interdimensional chasm.
The sloops clustered around each other, lost in a swirling, rippling mess of blues and indigos. The rip behind them grew ever smaller; though whether it was closing or they were moving away was unclear. Around them, strange glowing orbs danced around them, floating giddily through the incomprehensible chaos.
Lightning flashed and crackled down the masts, leaving fractal blue marks seared into the wood.
Sechyo wondered if they would make it back to the real world in one piece... or if they would even make it at all...

This piece was inspired by a decorative display in the basement of the St Augustine Lighthouse. They had several low-detail model ships strung from the ceiling of the cistern with blue lighting angled up at them. I thought it was super cool, so I snapped a picture and digitally painted it when I got home.
